Another Watt brother will soon be in the NFL, and he’s not just one living off his family’s last name.
Yes, former Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Watt cheap jerseys for sale will be following in his brothers’ footsteps but has an aim to create his own identity in the process.
“I think the goal is to one day have someone go up to J.J. and say, ‘Hey, are you T.J. Watt’s older brother?” Watt told guest host Mike Heller on the “Rich Eisen Show” Friday. “That’s got to be a goal of mine.”
T.J. Watt, who declared early to enter the 2017 NFL Draft, already has two brothers in the NFL – J.J. Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year-winning defensive end with the Houston Texans and Derek Watt, who was a rookie fullback with the San Diego Chargers last season.
T.J. Watt, even though he wants to forge his own path, does at least have some things in common in his game compared to J.J. Watt. Both are former tight ends who made the switch to playing defense and became top pass rushers.
After redshirting as a freshman in 2013, missing the season due to injury in 2014 and seeing limited playing time in 2015, Watt had a breakout season in 2016 with 11.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss as a part of the 63 total tackles he had for the season. He also had one interception which was returned for a touchdown, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Before the 2015 season, Watt had been a tight end at Wisconsin – the same position J.J. Watt initially played when he was at Central Michigan as a freshman before transferring to the Badgers in 2008.
After the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine which starts later this month, T.J. Watt said he and his two brothers will reconvene in their native Wisconsin to train for the upcoming season. (Derek also played at Wisconsin.)
“It gets really competitive because we’ve all been separated for a long period of time and we don’t really know where everyone is at strength wise,” T.J. Watt said. “So when we get together we like to push it and sometimes you have to back off a little because you’ll be trying to do as much weight as J.J. and obviously J.J. is five years more developed than me, I like to say.”
But when asked who would win in a 40-yard dash between him and his brothers, T.J. Watt offered little hesitation.
“It would be a close race, but I think I would take the cake on that one,” Watt said.
Growing up, the Watt brothers also were competitive amongst each other in backyard football games that sometimes would cheap team jerseys turn nasty.
“J.J. was the one taking it the most serious, and Derek was just trying to have fun,” Watt said. “I was the one screwing around too much, then they would beat up on me and I would go crying to mom. That’s usually how it worked out.”
But J.J. and Derek Watt, both hold their youngest brother in their best interest too. A projected first- or second-round pick, T.J. Watt said both helped him in coming to his decision to go pro early.
“At the end of the day, this is something soccer jerseys for cheap I’ve dreamed on so long, and I’m confident in my work ethic and my skill set to make this happen now,” T.J. Watt said.
The 2017 NFL Draft will be held from April 27-29 in Philadelphia.
